The first run of Alaska Silver Salmon begins in late July and continues through August. The second run of silvers starts in late August and goes through the end of October, and the Alaska Silver Salmon season ends on November 30th. The limit for these fish is 2 per day in August & 3 per day in September with no Annual limit. These are the most acrobatic of all the salmon. Silver Salmon are aggressive feeders and willing to strike at a variety of artificial lures and bait. We often limit out within a few hours of being on the river if the timing is right and the run is strong but we like to have you book a full day, giving us time to target Dolly Varden and Trophy Rainbow Trout.

Silver Salmon Fishing in Alaska

As the summer nears its close and the days get shorter, it’s the perfect time to start silver salmon fishing in Alaska. Fishing for silvers begins in earnest at the end of July, as the sockeye salmon start to leave the waters of the Kenai River and make their way toward the ocean. Their departure lets the silvers take center stage, which means a different way of fishing. For many anglers, going out in boats with an experienced guide makes a world of difference.

What Makes Silver Salmon the Perfect Salmon?

Silver salmon, also known as Coho salmon, may be smaller than king salmon but are far from small. These fish are rich in healthy fats without being overly rich in flavor and reasonably priced. Silver salmon offers something for everyone to enjoy.

They also provide an exciting challenge for anglers of all skill levels. For new anglers and tourists looking to test their skills, fishing for silver salmon in Alaska is one of the best ways to experience the thrill of the catch.

How Do You Fish for Silver Salmon?

If you’ve fished for sockeye salmon before, you know they aren’t aggressive biters. Silver salmon, on the other hand, are quite the opposite. Whether you’re fishing in the ocean or the Kenai River, silver salmon are known for their aggressive nature. They readily bite at bait and strike at lures with enthusiasm. To catch silver salmon, use brightly colored lures or bait that triggers their instinct to bite, and be prepared for a spirited fight.

If you’re an expert in fly-fishing, you’ll find yourself right at home when silver fishing because the jerky motions of fly fishing are ideal for attracting silvers. Getting the right fly in place and using your technique give you a great start to catching a big one.
